100% certain it was exactly that! That's the set-up that got me through typing up many a high school report, essay, and term paper. I particularly remember thinking the slotted wood bits for the flat cable seemed cheesy and that the indented square on the top of the base cover looked like there should have been a logo sticker or something there, but it was just blank. As I said, I think it was a product called "C64 Freedom" but I'm not sure about that or who made/sold the kits. Now, if I can just find the magazine ad from which I most likely mail ordered it...

Thanks, that's definitely an ad for a similar system but the form factor of the drawing and the "5 foot cable" description don't match this particular item. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow. This is off topic... but the whole "send a check or money order"... you'd have no idea if a company is still in business, or how long it would take to get stuff.

I remember that as a kid, I had some older comic books, and one time I decided I wanted to order "100 army men". So I got $2 from my piggy bank (it was actually a little safe with a combination lock) and sent it off. I never got my army men or my money back.
