Obviously vim would be pretty beefy for an 8 bit platform, but it actually started life on the Amiga back in the day. Are there any vi clones already ported or could easily be ported to the X16?

Not vi but there is X16Edit (can be found in the download section) which is a Nano clone.

The Amiga may be where you learned about it, but vi dates back to 1976; its longtime rival emacs (known to Amiga users by its derivative microEMACS) is about the same age.

Yes, Vim the clone started on the Amiga, but vi per se started on the BSD fork of UNIX. Supposedly the very PDP-11 that BSD was developed on was still marooned in some hallway at Berkeley collecting dust only a few years ago. I asked for it when I visited, but presumably it had been shipped off to a museum or recycled by then ?
