I know the whole point of this computer is to push beyond what a C64 can do.
But since I do not have a C64 currently it would be nice to have some sort of C64 support or emulator.
Is anything like this possible/planned?

I do not think it will be possible to emulate the C64 on the CX16. I have written an article about converting a very simple program from the C64 to CX16.

In theory. A C64 program that does NO graphics, NO audio and only uses ROM routines for screen, keyboard and file I/O WILL run on the X16. In practice I've found exactly one of those. And I had to load it with LOAD 'unzip64.prg", 8 ,1 to get it at the correct address. Nope. It's not possible with the current hardware, and there are no plans to try to make that happen. If you want to run Commodore 64 software, VICE is the best choice and runs on just about anything.

Yes, other than "vanilla" Basic code started up after putting the text screen in a 40 column mode, it would be quite uncommon. I will note that this is how I developed the first (command line up and running, but never completely working) version of xForth ... on the VICE emulator for the Super CPU64, so that it was emulating running the 65816 in emulation mode, the 65C02 opcodes worked.
But even in that one and the one currently under development, I had a few snippets of code which were conditionally assembled ... since making the RAM underneath the BASIC ROM available for a very small Block file in the C64 (for testing) and using High RAM segments for Block files in the CX16 will obviously use different code, and a page of Text Input Buffer, Pictured Numeric Output and the user scratch space "PAD" are in $9F00-$9FFF in the C64 and in Golden RAM in the CX16.
And once it's up and running in the CX16, I'll have to "downport" the C64 version to work without the extra 65C02 opcodes.
