Here is a write-up of using the X16FONTS editor program on the X16.

It might not be a far stretch to adapt this into a sprite editor or general VRAM editor. But it has some utility functions and export features specifically designed to help end-users quickly just up their own custom fonts.
And it's an example of what BASLOAD can be used for, since the editor was written entirely in BASIC.
