Tariffs on goods imported to the US

Post by TomXP411 »

** Update: So far, no one is being charged tariffs on their imported Lazer 3D cases. We think this is due to the "de minimis exemption", which basically means you can buy up to $800 worth of imported items before tariffs kick in.

** Original Post:

FYI, the US President just signed a sweeping tariff measure that will affect the cost of nearly all goods imported into the US.

I don't have all of the information yet, but here's what I do have:

All imports will have a new tariff of at least 10%. This is an additional tax, imposed on top of whatever you pay for the item.

While the list is pretty extensive, the highest tariffs appear to be:
  • China: 67%
  • EU: 39%
  • Vietnam: 90%
  • Taiwan: 64%
  • Japan: 46%
  • India: 52%
  • South Korea: 50%
  • Thailand: 72%
  • Switzerland: 61%
  • Indonesia: 64%
  • Malaysia: 47%
  • Cambodia 97%
Anyone ordering items sourced from these countries should expect some significantly higher prices, starting tomorrow.

Of note, imports from the UK will be charged at the baseline rate of 10%. This means the Lazer 3D cases will be 10% more expensive.

How will I pay the tariff

At present, we expect individual customers will have to pay the tariffs to their shipping company or to US Customs. When an incoming package passes through customs, the declared value on the package will be used to assess an import duty. You'll get a letter in the mail asking for an additional charge to release your package.

It is important to note that there are scammers out there sending fake messages that resemble the ones you'll receive from the shipping companies. Make sure to keep your tracking numbers and confirm the tracking number against the actual package you're expecting. Also confirm that the URLs on any received messages actually go to the actual shipping company's web site or to the US Customs or Treasury web site. (In other words, follow all the usual anti-phishing practices.)

I'm going to keep this thread open to allow people to discuss their experiences with the import process and discuss the tariff rates and payment procedures.

Thanks, everyone.

For an individual buying a single item, like a case, won't de minimis exemptions apply? Generally, if you are only buying $800 or less in goods, you don't need to pay any duties. Again, not to be political, but POTUS appears to be trying to invalidate de minimis specifically for China, which may or may not be legal and could be subject to judicial review.

So, if you are buying a single PCB from a Chinese manufacturer, usually you would just pay the retail cost plus shipping. You would have to pay duty if you were buying a whole bunch at once, like buying a production-run quantity of X16 motherboards. This is where tariffs could really affect pricing in the immediate future. If de minimis is successfully suspended, the higher tariffs could be applied even to a one-off purchase.

This is one of the many questions I still have. What's happening right now is unprecedented, which is why I'm hoping people will record their experiences here, so others will know what to expect.

De minimis did appear to apply to my Lazer3D case. There was an import scan, but no prompt for extra fees, and the shipment arrived on the day that UPS originally predicted.

De minimis has been eliminated for imports from China, not other countries.

And it gets better...

Chinese goods are now being slapped with a 125% tariff, as the taxes on goods from other countries has been paused for 90 days. (Either that or set to 10%. I've heard both.)

So ordering from PCBWay will be an issue, until this is resolved. Everything coming out of China is going to cost twice as much as it did yesterday.
