I am anshul from INDIA.
I saw that commander x16 was very good as it was not EMULATION like THE C 64 from Retr* G*m*s L*d. (*e t r o G a m e s * t * .)
I was emulating other systems like M*g* 65 retro computer on PC.They said: The copyright holder will sue them if the included "ROM" files in file but your (X16) emulator was good: I just downloaded the file and executed it.
Will the copyright holder not sue you like the Mega ** guys ??
(Note: I have not taken names as they appear but put asterisks to not break the rules of the site. You can take the name both the time and replace *'s with the letters)

Namaste/namaskaram Anshul! I hope you find the X16 an enjoyable hobby.
I followed Stephen Gardner's blog for quite a while, always keeping a cost/benefit tally in my head. I constantly wondered how I could justify the time and money investment in buying it. Not cheap of course, but the other problem is the time investment required to grok it well. I lack that time.
The X16, on the other hand, seems comprehensible to me, and more affordable. So, while I would love to have a C65 clone on my desktop, The X16 is the winner in my own books.

Namaste RJE,
The X16 is INCOMPATIBLE with thousands and thousands of C64 program
The c65/m*g* 6* is 100% compatible with 3 computers ie. CO*MODOR* 64, CO*MO*ORE 65 (prototype,unreleased) AND EXCLUSIVE MEGA 65 MODE
Note that the Mega 65 has 40 Mhz Clock speed, inbuilt 3 1/2 inch floppy,SD card 100 freeze slot to freeze your programs, on the fly clock speed change and all previous c64 hardware and many more for the same price.

Hey there,
So to answer your questions, from what I understand:
- You shouldn't have problems not censoring other projects' names.
- As far as I know, compatibility with the C64 isn't really a goal past the fact it has the same CPU and the same BASIC, but you should have a similar experience on the X16. It's just supposed to be a better C64, kinda like the C64 is a better PET.
- The team has a licence from Cloanto to use, modify and adapt the original C64 ROM for the X16, so no lawsuit here. Hopefully.
Hope this answers your questions ?

Why are you putting *s in names? Don't do that. If you truly were trying to censor names to hide them from content filters, the moderators would see right through that. If you were
not trying to censor names... it's just making it harder for people to read.

Well, yeah - you can't distribute other people's software without their permission. So while building a MEGA 65 emulator is perfectly legal, giving away Commodore's ROMs is not. Sort of.
Commodore actually permitted people to use the ROMs in non-commercial contexts. This is why VICE includes the Commodore ROMs, but the Ultimate 64 does not. (Retro Games obtained a license for TheC64, as has Individual Computers for their Turbo Chameleon and Reloaded.) However... I have never been able to actually confirm this directly. The archives for the newsgroup with that conversation are forever lost. So the safe thing to do is not distribute Commodore ROMs without obtaining a license.

Precisely. This project worked hard to get the license, and it was a great relief when it came through.
@Anshul3: There are lots of projects to emulate the C64, and this one is not aimed at treading over that same ground. Instead, it is aimed at giving people the EXPERIENCE of programming and working with an 8bit system without all of the inconveniences that were a result of the costs of things we take for granted today: just for one example, in the 1980's, mass storage as fast as flash storage on SD cards would have cost many thousands of dollars.

@BruceMcF THE MEGA 65 IS NOT EMULATION (IT IS AN FPGA RE IMPLEMENTATION)AND IT HAS AN SD CARD INTERFACE AS WELL AND THE SPEED IS 40 MHz COMPARED TO THE X16 's 8! (ALL THE PORTS OF C65 AND MODERN CONVINIENCES LIKE SDCARD, INTERNET(Which x16 lacks) AND VIC-4 CHIP WHICH IS BETTER THAN X16's AND TO TOP IT OFF , ITS ALL OPEN SOURCE
https://github.com/MEGA65 (EVENT THE FPGA CODE check it on
:https://github.com/MEGA65/mega65-core/)) UNLIKE THE VERA CHIP WHICH IS CLOSED SOURCE

We are aware of what the X16 is, you don't need the caps lock. If you don't like it, you are free to go elsewhere.
