Hello from Canada!

Post by jturco1990 »

Hello everyone,

my name is Joseph, im from Toronto, Canada. I have been watching 8-bit guy and other channels that review and talk about retro systems. I grew up in the 90's, and was around newer DOS and Windows machines, but i never learned to program, and i really wanted to know and play with the insides of a computer fully (let me tell you that my dad was not happy when i found "add/remove programs" in windows 95 and started uninstalling his programs).

I always wanted a 8-bit machine, but the cost is quite out of my budget to afford one. I have never really played around with a emulator fully other than a speccy emulator. I then watched the video series on the commander X16 and was hooked. I saw the opportunity (if phase 2-3 is much more affordable than phase 1) and came here. I downloaded the emulator and will be playing around with it to learn BASIC and get my feet wet when the real deal is available. Thanks for having me here, and Hello World!

Welcome! (from the world)

Why is is that every Canadian is from Toronto? Is Canada a big country with other places to live? Or are you just deceiving the planet by suggesting everyone is from Toronto? :D

Joking aside, welcome to what will be the second coming of the 8 bit revolution. Starting with the emulator is a good choice as the project moves into phase 1, hopefully followed by the gen 2 and 3 machines which might be more affordable for foreigners like yourself.

Enjoy learning BASIC, plus welcome again to the forum for the X16 community!

Now there's a puzzle, as a mere two fifths of Canadians live in Toronto, and less than half of those live in the "Toronto population center".

Perhaps it's the influence of the Toronto PET Users Group.

With a population for 40 million, 2/5ths is 16 million people. That's a fair #! When people tell me they are from Toronto I aways ask what part, and usually get someplace within a 4 hour commute, since everyone works there :-) Perhaps geographical clustering to the closes "known" location is common in other countries as well.

Anyway, I do think that the X16 will help a new generation learn the magic of a simple 8 bit system that has a long legacy of users and software behind it. Plus help those who were there in the 80's relive those days of printing the famed:
10 Print "Hello Joseph";
20 Goto 10
I don't even remember seeing Print "Hello World" when I was young. Now it's all about how fast one can get to it the days

Hey, Joseph:

Love Toronto. I live near Detroit and spent a week there some years back. Took the train from Windsor, which was cool as I hadn't ridden a cho-cho since I was a wee lad. I stayed at a B&B about a mile west of Yonge-Dundas Square. Would love to go back.

Sorry you missed out on the dawning of the microcomputer age. Great time for geeks. I didn't know about the "Retro Rennaissance" 'til about a year ago when I learned of the C64 Maxi, then I came upon David's Commander X16 videos. At first, I was disappointed in the form factor; I guess was expecting something more along the lines of a Commodore 64-type case. Now that I know more about the project, I'm fine with it, though I think they should use a vertically-oriented case, which would take up less space, especially since you can't put a monitor on top of the current version.

'Kay, enough rambling. Welcome aboard!
