would it be too much trouble to make a link in forum posts to default open on a new tab?

An external link in somebody's post? Yeah, that seems fine to me.
In the meantime, most web browsers on desktop will open a link in a new tab if you middle-click instead of left-click. On mobile, I think it involves long-pressing and choosing "open in a new tab" from a context menu.
