SNES pad compatibility

Post by danboid »

Has anyone had any difficulty using any clone SNES controllers with the X16 (such as the TRIXES SNES pads available on Amazon) or should pretty much any clone SNES controller work with the X16?

For the inexpensive SNES gamepads - those common ones in the $5 - $10 range - while they work, a number of them have had an issue with the SELECT button not responding (I've tried over 30 of them, about 60% of them had issue).

I've not had any issues with the wireless SNES-style gamepads, nor any issue with original Nintendo SNES gamepads. So it may be worth paying the little extra to just get those.

Alle the cheap SNES controllers I have bought, work.
Some of them have had issues, but they have all been solved with a simple bodge-wire.

I have a total of 8 controller, but there only seems to be two different kinds.
One has purple buttons:

Does not need a bodge:

But has a couple of resistors on the board

The other kind has colored buttons:

And needs this bodge:

It does not have any resistors on the backside of the board.

Thanks Jimmy!

The Uzebox has issues using those same controllers that you added the bodge wire too. Unfortunately I think its a different issue because I've tried adding the same bodge and it hasn't fixed using the controller for the Uzebox.

Eventually the Uzebox kernel will get updated to support these controllers but such an update won't fix these controllers for use with older games that cannot be rebuilt from source. Thankfully nearly all Uzebox games are open source so most will be able to be patched.
